Why TikTok is tricky to measure
TikTok is mostly watched, not clicked. People see a video, remember the product and buy later, often by searching your name or typing your web address. That is real influence, but it leaves a weak trail. Some sales TikTok caused never get credited to it. Other sales get credited to TikTok because a buyer happened to watch an ad, even though they were already on their way to buy.
Who uses TikTok matters too. Pew Research Center's 2025 survey found that 37% of US adults use TikTok, and use is heavily tilted toward younger adults (see the chart). If your customers are mostly over 50, a weak TikTok result may be about audience fit, not measurement.
What TikTok counts by default
An attribution window is the time after someone interacts with an ad during which the platform will take credit for a sale. When TikTok introduced its Attribution Manager in 2022, it said web advertisers using the TikTok Pixel or Events API are set to 7-day click and 1-day view by default. Click windows can be set to 1, 7, 14 or 28 days, and view windows to off, 1 or 7 days, as of that announcement.
The view part is where numbers get generous. A person who watched your ad and bought the next day through a Google search counts as a TikTok sale, and Google may count it too. Our guide to view-through conversions explains why that inflates platform totals. A useful habit: look at the same campaign with view credit switched off. The gap between the two numbers shows how much of TikTok's claim rests on views alone.

Get the tracking right first
TikTok learns from the conversions you send it. The TikTok Pixel sends events from the browser; the Events API sends them from your server or store platform, which is less affected by ad blockers and browser privacy settings. Using both is common, but each purchase must carry the same event ID in both so it is counted once.
TikTok publishes case studies of advertisers adding the Events API. In one, Paint Your Life reported that CPA was reduced 32% while conversions grew by 48%. That is a single advertiser, chosen by TikTok, so take it as a reason to set up tracking well rather than a result to expect.
Check TikTok's claims against your own sales
Platform reports answer the question "which sales did our ads touch?" You need the answer to "did our sales go up because of TikTok?" Some simple ways to get closer:
- Tag every TikTok link with UTM parameters so your analytics and store can see which visits came from TikTok.
- Add a "How did you hear about us?" question at checkout. Video-driven buyers often say TikTok even when no click was tracked.
- Watch branded search and direct traffic when TikTok spend starts or stops. A real effect usually shows up there.
- Compare total revenue in weeks with and without TikTok spend, keeping other channels steady.
- Track TikTok's claimed sales as a share of your real orders each month, and investigate sudden changes.
When to run a lift test
A lift test, or incrementality test, splits people into two groups. One sees your ads and one does not. The difference in purchases between them is the sales your ads actually caused. TikTok offers this as a Conversion Lift Study, with a test group who see your ads and a control group who do not. TikTok's help page says you must meet minimum ad spend requirements and run long enough to gather statistically significant data, so it suits steady, sizable budgets.
Smaller advertisers can run a rougher version: pause TikTok in some regions or for a few weeks and compare sales against similar regions or weeks that kept running. Our incrementality testing guide walks through how to set that up fairly.
Keep a running scorecard
Measuring honestly is a monthly habit, not a single report. Keep TikTok's claimed sales, your verified sales and spend in one place, and read the trend. Matrix ROI puts each platform's claims beside the payments and store records you upload, day by day; a direct TikTok connection is in development, and its exports can be uploaded today.
